Sydney On The Go
Flying to Sydney
Sydney International Airport is 10 km south of the city (and known to many Sydneysiders as "Mascot Airport", after the nearby suburb). The domestic airport is a further 2 km away: passengers in transit should use the shuttle buses provided by the appropriate airlines.
The efficient AirportLink train is the fastest and most convenient way to reach the centre of Sydney. There are rail stations in both the domestic and the international terminals. Trains run every 10 minutes from 5.09am to 11.45pm, and the journey into the city takes only 13 minutes. A single ticket from the airport to the City costs A$11.80 (in 2004).
A taxi from the airport to the city centre will cost around A$25 one way, and should take around 20 minutes in light traffic. Each terminal has its own sheltered taxi rank with supervisors on hand in peak hours. All the major car hire companies have offices at the airport terminals.
Sydney buses
Buses operate from the city, ferry wharves and railway stations. The main bus termini are in Wynyard Park on George Street, at Circular Quay and at Railway Square near Broadway and Central station. Visitors can call the State Transit Authority for information on connecting routes, ticket prices and time-tables. Free maps are available from outlets at the airport, Circular Quay, Wynyard Bus Station and Queen Victoria Building.
Ferries in Sydney
Sydney is a harbour city, and ferries have been part of its transport scene since the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Today, ferries provide an efficient commuter service to many of the harbourside areas, with all services beginning and ending at Circular Quay.
