Berwick Street, Soho, W1. 8am- 6pm Mon-Sat. Good-value fruit, vegetables, cheese and bread.

Borough Market, Southwark Street, SE1. Noon-6pm Fri, 9am-4pm Sat. Good farmers' market, organic produce from Britain and abroad; excellent quality but not cheap.

Brick Lane, E1. 8am-1pm Sun. Everything from bananas to bicycles. Great fun, also home to cheap, authentic Indian restaurants.

Brixton Market, Electric Avenue, SW9. African and Caribbean produce plus secondhand clothes and much bric-a-brac.

Camden Lock, off Chalk Farm Road, NW1. Outdoor 10am-6pm Sat-Sun, indoor 10am-6pm Tues-Sun. Tourist-packed crafts market in canalside setting. Stalls in nearby Camden Market (Camden High Street, 9am- 5.30pm Thurs-Sun) have street fashion and retro gear.

Columbia Road, Bethnal Green, E2. The best flower market. 8am-1pm Sun.

Greenwich Market, Greenwich High Road, SE10. 9am-5pm Sat-Sun. Arts and crafts, - secondhand clothes, books, records.

Jubilee Market & Apple Market, Covent Garden - Piazza, WC2. The first is a souvenir trap for tourists, the second has a variety of jewellery and arty crafty nick-nacks.

Petticoat Lane, Middlesex Street, E1. 9am-2pm Sun. Crowded tradtional market selling everything from food to hardware; also with excellent bagel bakeries.

Portobello Road, W11. Antiques market 7am-6pm Sat; general market Mon-Sat, closed Thurs afternoon. High-priced antiques, bargain fruit and vegetables, plus new and secondhand clothes, books and music stalls. Saturday's the big day - very crowded.

Ridley Road, Hackney, E8. Every day except Sun. London's most ethnically diverse market. Colourful, exotic and crowded.
